I work predominantly in watercolour and gouache, capturing beautiful fleeting moments of the natural world. My love of textile design includes translating my ideas onto fabric, by exploring various methods of hand-printing, painting and stitch. I paint daily, observing and recording detailed studies or loose, inky pools of colour that often evoke a feeling flow and energy.
I have a background in printed textile design, creating collections for international fashion and furnishing markets. I graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1994 and then worked freelance for fashion print studios in London for over 10 years. During this time, I was also commissioned to create furnishing designs for studios based in Leicester. I have also lectured at the University of Portsmouth and I’m the Course Manager for A-Level Fashion and Textiles at Havant and South Downs College.
I love creating order from chaos … spending time working with fine detail and small touches to build a bigger picture that communicates a clear message through design. But, I also love the chaos itself. Ginkgo is an opportunity for me to explore new paths and to take a new direction with my work in a more creative, artistic way.
I’m a creative designer with over 25 years’ experience working in graphic design, branding and marketing. I have created award-winning campaigns and led design teams for the Universities of Portsmouth, Surrey and Southampton. I’ve working collaboratively with graphic designers, design and marketing agencies, photographers and film-makers, providing creative and art direction to meet the clients’ requirements — working end-to-end from concept through to completion.
“Working with Jean-Paul has been an enriching experience. The design and finish of the product has exceeded our expectations and we’re receiving incredible feedback from our clients leading to new business opportunities.”
Andrew McKay — Creative Director, Stock + Bokeh
“Jean-Paul is very calm, creative and will go the extra mile without being asked. I would have no hesitation recommending Jean-Paul to anyone to work with and have no doubts that they would be thrilled with the creative outcome.”
Becky Coote — Virtual Assistant
“Jean-Paul’s attention to detail was extremely strong and he instinctively understands the requirements of working within a brand framework and has discipline and rigour in this regard that is hard to come by.”
Andy Blair — Director of Marketing, University for the Creative Arts
“Jean-Paul is a very talented and motivated designer. When I worked with him he was always trying to squeeze the last drop of creativity out of a brief to produce the best work possible, often against very tight deadlines. I’m very happy to recommend him.”
